What Should i Get a boy for his 6th Birthday?

Q. ?

A. Six years old is a really fun age to buy for because there are alot of really neat toys they can get into.

Personally I love going into one of four areas at that age: Magic, Science, Building or Games.

Magic:

This set is designed for ages 6 and up. It has 150 different tricks that are explained in easy picture based instructions. I love getting a kid at this age magic because I find a set like this helps kids learn to follow instructions... and most importantly: take the shyest kid in the world and get them doing some magic tricks and they will start performing. Its a great confidence builder!

Science.

I love optic/discovery toys for this age. This set for example has a telescope, periscope and something called a super optic wonder plus (which includes binoculars, a compass, whistle, light, morse code...etc). What I like about this set is that it is great for exploring (star gazing etc.), learning about how optics work and it is also great for imaginative play (like pretending to be spies, or pretending to be an adventurer)!

Another neat science idea, is to look into Sciencewiz Kits. These kits are multiple award winning science kits that are done ina really wonderful highly illustrative age appropriate way. The Electricity kit for example has a 40 page illustrated book on electricity and has all the materials for 18 different activities (for example creating a electric circuit that lights a light bulb from a battery and so on). The Electricity, Chemistry, and Magnetism kits are all recommended for ages 5-10.

Building toys:

Alot of people are saying Lego and I totally agree Lego is a great gift for a 6 year old, but just to point out another building option is Meccano (also known as Erector Sets). Meccano sets are great for 6 years old and it is a different kind of construction than lego because it is screwdriver construction which is great for fine motor skill development! Also Meccano sets often include a motor so that you can add movement to your creation.

For example this Meccano set has materials to build 10 different models with instructions (though add imagination and the number of models are infinite) and it has a motor so that all the models can move:

Games:

A wonderful way to build up social skills, problem solving skills, and logic... plus fun for everyone!

Rush Hour Jr. is a great puzzle game that can be played alone or cooperatively in a team. The challenge is grid lock in this game. The cars are set up on the grid according to the challenge cards and the child needs to manoeuvre the cars in order to drive the ice cream truck out of the one opening in the grid.

Kelbazar is like pictionary but using wooden objects/shapes. Children need to use the included wooden pieces to represent the pictures on the card while their teammate guesses what object is on the card. Really fun and really challenging. This is a great way to develop creativity and imagination.

(Another great spin on this style game is Lego's Creationary)

Wait one last idea! What about a watch? Great age for kids to have a wrist watch and lego makes an awesome one that combines building too!

Here's an example:

Anyway I hope some of these ideas work for you!

Gift ideas for a 5 year old boy?
Q. My son, Noah's birthday is coming up, and I just cannot think of anything to get him. I have been to numerous stores, searching for his "big present," and then I buy him a bunch of little things. A "big thing," would be something that costs less than about $300. And the small stuff I just get from the dollar tree. He likes cars and trucks, and stuff like that. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

~kate, mommy of six, and two on the way!

Q.

A. Boy or Girl? I have a 6 year old boy and he loves Lego sets, Spider man stuff, hot wheel stuff. My 7 year old niece likes Polly pocket and little pet shop stuff, At that age, a lot of them don't want the "baby" things. Dolls and Bob the builder, Barney, etc. They aren't too hard to shop for.
