Is it appropriate to send my Jehova Witness friend a birthday card?

Q. I have their birthdays and anniversary dates. Im not wanting to send gifts. Just a card. Is that appropriate?

A. No....but anniversary dates is Ok...

Why??

Do Bible references to birthday celebrations put them in a favorable light? The Bible makes only two references to such celebrations:

Gen. 40:20-22: “Now on the third day it turned out to be Pharaoh’s birthday, and he proceeded to make a feast . . . Accordingly he returned the chief of the cupbearers to his post of cupbearer . . . But the chief of the bakers he hung up.”

Matt. 14:6-10: “When Herod’s birthday was being celebrated the daughter of Herodias danced at it and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Then she, under her mother’s coaching, said: ‘Give me here upon a platter the head of John the Baptist.’ . . . He sent and had John beheaded in the prison.”

Everything that is in the Bible is there for a reason. (2 Tim. 3:16, 17) Jehovah’s Witnesses take note that God’s Word reports unfavorably about birthday celebrations and so shun these.

How did early Christians and Jews of Bible times view birthday celebrations?

“The notion of a birthday festival was far from the ideas of the Christians of this period in general.”—The History of the Christian Religion and Church, During the Three First Centuries (New York, 1848), Augustus Neander (translated by Henry John Rose), p. 190.

“The later Hebrews looked on the celebration of birthdays as a part of idolatrous worship, a view which would be abundantly confirmed by what they saw of the common observances associated with these days.”—The Imperial Bible-Dictionary (London, 1874), edited by Patrick Fairbairn, Vol. I, p. 225

What is a good fundraising idea for a personal trip?
Q. I am trying to go on a leadership trip with my school's gifted program to Columbia University this summer. It cost around $1600 and is a 6 day trip in New York City. I just need some ideas that my friend and I can use to raise that money.

A. Grocery bagging, candy selling, gift wrap sell, and gift wrapping holiday gifts, birthday gifts,, car wash, detail car, house cleaning, cooking, babysitting, leaf raking, snow shovel, personal shopper,, chauffeur, dog walker, pet sitter, house sitter, tutor, senior companion, errand runner, fruit and nut picker, usher at local theatre.

You could call around and see who locally sponsors scholarships, and funds for academic support. Churches are good too.

And lastly .....set up a spot in a ladies room with a designer fragrance, mints, gum, kleenex, and stuff.... if a club will allow. Don't forget to take all the paper towels and make us pay for free stuff lol.

Seriously good luck on your job search, and continue to stay focused in school.

What are some good ideas of gifts that I can get or make for my boyfriend, for this coming Valentine's Day?
Q. My boyfriend and I have been together for about 4 months but we are very serious about "us". He's gotten me really good gifts for my birthday and Christmas and I don't wanna look bad giving him a sucky Valentine's gift. He loves Baseball & Batman if that helps for any good ideas.

A. Sports Gear

If sports rule your boyfriend's life, you might want to find out what his favorite sports and teams are and get him something that fits into that category. For example, your guy might be really into baseball, so getting him a baseball hat might seem like a great idea, but if he's a Boston Red Sox fan, you want to make sure you don't buy him a New York Yankees hat. Or, if he's a hockey fan, getting a basketball jersey might not be the best idea. Look at what he wears, or talk to his friends about his sports likes and dislikes.
Video Games

If your boyfriend is a gamer, there might be no better gift than a video game he doesn't have yet. If there is a big release coming up near his birthday, reserve the game early and let him know (this way, he doesn't buy it himself). Or, if you know there is a big release in the future, reserve it on his birthday, and then give him the gift when the game comes out. If money is an object, many game systems come with a "Best Of" series, which usually runs about $20 cheaper than normally priced video games. These games are a bit older, but they are a good way to get a recent game for a low price.
Music Lovers

If he is into music and always seems to be on his MP3 player, you may want to focus on this aspect of his personality. Think about purchasing some nice headphones for him to listen to his music on. There are some nice sound-dampening earphones that won't cost too much. If he has a favorite style of music, put together a mix CD with songs you think he might like. If you are doing this, try to put some songs he might not have heard or bands he doesn't normally listen to.

Or a Guitar :)
Good Luck!
