What are good birthday ideas for a girl turning 16?
Q. Hi. I have a foreign exchange student staying with me from spain and she is turning 16 in about a month now and i am totally stumped of what to get her and what to do for her. she doesnt have a lot of friends and she says she doesnt want to spend it with friends but with me and my family. any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks!
A. Can you ask her parents what she likes to do or what she usually does for her birthday? She is young and this is a huge birthday, no matter where you come from. You could have a private "Sweet Sixteen birthday" with an age appropriate movie after a nice meal at a restaurant, and later have cake and ice cream. It troubles me that this student does not want to include others her age--you may want to speak to a guidance counselor at school about what you can do to help her make friends. This seems to be the true issue behind your question. As far as what to get her, a mall gift certificate followed by a trip to the mall would be fun, as well as something personal such as a piece of jewelry that she will have to remember her experience. I really do worry about her social situation, though--it looks like she may need some help in that direction.
