What special b day present would you get an 11 year old girl?

Q. Please DON'T SAY makeup body lotions or any stuff that has to do with pretty pampering she's Tom boy-Ish but has her girly sides she likes games having fun her friends arty things she doesn't want a tv computer or sterio she says she doesn't need those things and we need something VERY special this year any ideas?

A. Maybe art supplies like Prismacolor colored pencils with a mandala or stained glass coloring book & maybe an art pad, too. You might get a book on art history.

Another cool thing is a henna body paint kit with a book of instructions. Then she could do non-permanent tattoos for summer like on her ankles. One story in our newspaper told about a teenage girl who learned how to do it. She was quite talented, & her hair stylist referred her to be hired to do it for a bridal party. Could even do it at birthday parties. Don't suggest all that to her, but if she's interested & practices for a few years, it could lead to that.

Even though she's boyish, she still might want a cute easy-care hairstyle for summer. You could offer to pay for it. I do see that she wouldn't want pampering. There's still such a thing as something easy to blow dry after swimming & when traveling in the summer.

She might want her own luggage. I got some for my 8th grade graduation & used it for the next 15-20 years. It's especially important if you think she'll be going to such things as church camp, scout camp, or family vacations. Otherwise, if you're her parents, she'd keep on borrowing yours. The main thing with this would be to include her in the selection because it is an expensive gift.

It's a good age, too, for a pet if she doesn't already have one. Cats are a whole lot easier than dogs. If she's interested, you could take her to the animal shelter to pick out one & look into anything that will help in the care, such an outdoor cat cage or a subscription to Cat Fancy magazine. I suggest a pet because it's good to have a loyal friend like a cat around this age. I've always had cuddly cats who loved to be with me in the garden or late at night while I read or studied, but maybe that was just how they were raised & because I was such a doting "parent" to the cat.

Maybe she & her friends would enjoy doing something special like going to a musical or seeing an art exhibit in a gallery or museum in a nearby city, with lunch either before or after. Of course, if you live in a big city, that could be old hat to all of you. Here people have taken girls & their friends down to China Town for poking around the shops & for eating out. It's a big city, but that was one way to put a single focus on the outing. There may be something available near you that would be fun, something different than a school field trip would be.

If your area has any city or state parks around that charge admission, this time of year they may be selling annual passes. Also, there may be classes through the recreation department, either art & hobbies or something athletic. Look online or pick up their catalog & ask if she's interested.

Well, if there's nothing that she's been begging for, then you might want to jot down all the answers you've rec'd & simply ask if any of them appeal to her. (Otherwise, as you know, you'd be throwing away your money.)
