My 10 year old daughter wants to make some easy money. Her uncle has a store but the store business is slowly growing so not able to pay. She wants to sell lemonade this summer. 50 cents per cup. Would that be a good idea? Any other idea?

Answer
She might be able to help people when they have a party. A couple of women I know hire someone to help out when they're having potluck parties out on the deck or patio. Usually they hire either a teenager or college student, but your daughter might be able to do it.

Mainly, the hostess doesn't want to be stuck in the kitchen, wanting to be free to socialize with her guests. The helper might arrive early to help set up, then answer the door if the hostess is elsewhere, show people where to put their food, wash any dishes in the sink, make sure there are plates, napkins, & cups, help someone who wants a drink of water from the sink, carry out trash from time to time, & on & on. In one case, the hostess wanted lots of extra guests to stay out of the rest of the house except to find the bathroom & out again, a lightweight gatekeeper of sorts. Also, the helper helped me find an out-of-the-way place to set a little hostess gift & card. You're probably getting the idea.

She might charge $5/hr & make some flyers to take around your neighborhood. That's a cheap rate, but she is, after all, only 10 yrs old. Might be, too, that she would only work until 8 or 9 pm. She could find some cards with room for writing name & number & refuse all tips, but then hand the person her card for another job. She could learn online about kitchen hygiene, like washing her hands if she ever touched hand to face, etc. I also saw a site that teaches how to cut up veggies attractively & how to use knives without cutting off a finger. Earlier this week, I searched "how to cut up veggies" & saw that there were many results. Might be something you & she could watch & practice together.

She should be able to take a 15 min. break for a 4 hr. shift & may need to ask when it's time to do that. The hostess should invite her to fill a plate of food, but who knows? In any case, she shouldn't nibble all evening on the party food. She'll probably want to take a watch as she gets a feel for how the time goes. I hope I'm suggesting the right thing for her. You probably know your daughter & whether all of this will be a snap for her to learn, while still feeling that it's a good, fun job & not beneath her. It is a little role to play, fortunately among neighbors that she may know.

Otherwise, she could take a babysitting course, perhaps only assisting in the afternoon from time to time. She could also help out when there's a child's birthday party.

You could have a trial run on some of this at a party of your own. I'm thinking she could make a lot more than at a lemonade stand. She might also get requests from seniors for housework & yard help. She'll just have to decide what you & she are willing for her to do.

Christmas gift ideas for my mom?

My mom is in her 40s and she doesn't like jewelry or perfume or really anything the "typical woman" would like. Not sure what I could get her.. Any websites to find her a gift?

Answer
My aunt is like your mum. For her birthday last summer, I gave her a Quick-Dry towel, and she still raves about it. Here http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/1/1/2627-aquis-waffle-weave-hair-towel.html
If your mum travels or likes to camp, she might like one like this: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/36971?productId=791102&subrnd=0&qs=3006448_pmd_amazon

Otherwise, the place to start is to think about HER, not the typical woman. What are her special interests? What sorts of foods does she like? (Consider getting her the most luxurious versions of such foods.) What is her day like? (What might make her day easier?) What does she value most?/ Does she have any treasured collections? (Consider adding to such a collection.)
