I am looking for some innovative gift ideas for my mother's upcoming 72nd birthday. I have given her many gifts before anything from jewelry, to kitchen accessories, etc. I am looking for something authentic and original. Hopefully a gift she has never seen before which will bring true joy and emotion into her life. I am looking forward to hearing all of your creative gift ideas.

Thanks,
James D.

What are some volunteer ideas for someone under 18?

I live in Vista California and I really want to get involved in volunteering and meeting new people.
I like things with animals, but the animal shelter here only takes volunteers over 18.
Does anybody have volunteer ideas, or ideas just to meet new people?

Morgan:
When you say that the animal shelter on takes volunteers over 18 are you talking about a private animal shelter or do you mean the Humane Society? there is a difference. Here in Colorado we have both and they usually accept teenage volunteers. They can clean out the cages, feed the animals, walk the dogs, if they have a gift shop they can stock the shelves, do inventory, or if they have a thrift shop they can help sort through the donated items that come in, price items, help w/customers and may even tend the cash register.

Have you thought about nursing homes? they always need volunteers to visit w/residents, help out w/birthday parties, game night, bingo , read to residents take them for outings, or just wheel them outside to get fresh air and talk. some nursing homes have a inter-generational program where they match up children with residents to talk, watch movies together, play games, do arts & crafts, just visit with them, help out during the holidays decorating the facility.

you could volunteer at your local HIV/AIDS organization they always need help with fund raising, putting together safe sex kits, food bank, cleaning the facility, visiting the clients (buddy system),speakers bureau speaking to teens about HIV, & staffing the front desk etc .

the Local Food Bank stocking the shelves, sorting the food that comes in, doing inventory.

Your local Hospital, they have a volunteer program.

your local library, they will have a volunteer program.

your local homeless shelter, they might have a soup kitchen.

If your area has a wildlife agency they will accept volunteers, man booths for fairs, do lectures about animals, care for animals they care for, work on trails etc.

Even your local school will have a volunteer program of some sort. just ask what they need help with.

Really almost any place you can think of will be willing to take on a volunteer. Even businesses,it is usually called an apprenticeship.
